According to the production method, the steel sheet is classified into hot-rolled and cold-rolled. This also indicates the consistency in the production of sheet steel.

First of all, hot-rolled sheet is produced by rolling a heated steel billet. It is heated to the high temperature and fed to the rolling mill. The workpiece passes through the groups of rolls until a sheet of a given thickness is formed. After rolling, the sheet is coiled or chopped to a predetermined size.

Then the production of cold-rolled sheet is started. This method is more laborious and technologically more complicated. For rolling, a previously made hot-rolled sheet is supplied, which is no longer heated, but rolled “cold”. The result is a thinner, scale-free and geometrically correct sheet of metal, which is then wound into a roll.

Depending on the production method, the standard sheet thicknesses are:

Hot rolled sheet – from 1.5 to 150 mm

Cold rolled sheet – from 0.45 to 3 mm
